The Act
‘And what are you going to do for us?’
‘Juggle.’
‘Juggle?’
‘Yes.’
‘Not sing?’
‘No.’
‘Not dance?’
‘No.’
‘Juggle?’
‘Yes.’
‘With only one apple?’
‘Ah – there’s the magic.’
‘You also do magic?’
‘No.’
(Geraldine was confused. Normally contestants came on with a song or a dance. But a juggling act with only one apple? Hmmm.)
And then what happened was very strange. Contestant W stood up and all of a sudden started hurling himself in all directions. So speedy were his hurlings that Geraldine and Matthew became dizzy trying to follow his movements which had become a blur. Then it stopped.
Contestant W said nothing.
‘That’s it?’ asked Geraldine.
‘That’s it. What do you think?’
‘That is your juggling act?’
‘Yep.’
Geraldine and Matthew frowned at each other, unsure of how to mark this performance.
‘Umm . . .’
‘I didn’t state what precisely I would be juggling . . .’ said Contestant W.
‘You mean you juggled yourself?’
‘Exactemundo.’
‘And the apple?’
‘Prop, love.’
Geraldine and Matthew knew they had to put him forward – if only for his sheer audacity.
